I recall the Reagan/Carter debates and election cycle. The 52 American hostages had been held for over a year. Ayatollah Khomeini was teasing Carter with the hostages and after a failed rescue attempt, separated them to make it harder for the USA to rescue. I recall the election night returns. I remember Ronald Reagan carrying 49 of 50 states. I remember, when Reagan ran for re-election, his debate with former Vice President Walter Mondale, the debate Reagan and Mondale had. I remember the first campaign before he chose George H.W. Bush as his running mate, the debate they had for the Republican ticket.
Within hours of Reagan's Inauguration, the announcement came that the hostages had been released and were being sent to Frankfort Germany to a US Military hospital for checkup and care.
I remember the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan. I remember his remark to Nancy that he had forgot to duck. He had also joked with the surgical staff hoping they were not Democrats. I remember his triumphant return to the Oval Office after recovering from the attack and surgeries.
I remember something about Reagan early on. I remember him being criticized by the media for not meeting with the Soviet leaders. I remember him remarking that he would but they keep dying. Then, I recall, he met with Gorbachev. He told Gorbachev he did not trust him and said he would be glad to explain it to him why he didn't trust him.
I recall the SDI or "Star Wars" program. Many in the United States made fun of Reagan for it. But there was one person not making fun, Gorbachev. He was afraid of it. Reagan was astute enough to know that when a Soviet leader is anxious to negotiate something out of existence, that he must be afraid of it. Reagan kept SDI on the table. Even more so, he offered the Soviets the blueprints so they could build there own. This did nothing to put Gorbachev's mind at ease. Why? Because Gorbachev knew the Soviet economy could not support the construction and deployment of this system. Reagan kept it on the table.
I remember the stain on the Reagan Administration, the Iran-Contra Affair.
I recall the Savings and Loans Failures and the trouble with the Keeting Five.
Reagan inherited a stagnate economy, some would say the recession was already underway. He inherited excessive overuse of regulation. He was not afraid to tackle a hostile joint session of Congress. He was not afraid to tell Gorbachev how he felt, how the US would deal with things and above all, he was not afraid to tackle Communism as a whole. He literally wore the communists in the Soviet Union out. He wore them down. So much so that two years after he left office, the communist Soviet system collapsed. Even George H.W. Bush was unprepared for the fall.
I recall Reagan. I respect Reagan. I miss Reagan and I, without a shadow of a doubt, miss the Reagan Revolution.
